The Laboratory of Building Materials is one of the main laboratories that have been operating since the founding of the Polytechnic School. It provides theoretical and practical knowledge to students of School of Civil Engineering and postgraduate students of the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Program in the Protection, Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Monuments, on modern materials (cement, aggregates, concrete, steel), traditional materials of monuments and historic buildings, and repair materials.

Over the last twenty years, the Laboratory has developed a major research activity that mainly concerns two research fields:

– Applied research for the promotion of new materials in the production and utilization of industrial by-products in construction, for the benefit of:

  • saving natural resources and energy
  • protection of the environment
  • economy of construction

– Research on the analysis of historic materials and the conservation and restoration of buildings with conventional materials. Also, research regarding the properties of nano-modified building materials has been developed.

The scientific staff of the Laboratory consists of experienced and new researchers of various scientific disciplines (Civil Engineer, Geologist, Chemist, Architect) to adequately cover the complex problems encountered in the structure.
